Oolite Mine

Oolite Mine

rough hike over rocky hills

A mine operated by metal Dwarves (basically dumb robots. People-shaped, but not people.). 120 years ago, the Oolite family built these robots to mine more effectively, but something made the metal Dwarves act up and drove the family away. That something is gone now, and the metal Dwarves are behaving normally. The Oolite family has recently reclaimed the mine.

Points of Interest:

  • out-buildings
    • Metal Dwarves don’t need homes, but real Dwarves do.
    • Abandoned 120 years ago when the Oolites fled, but recently reclaimed. Not entirely cleaned up and renovated yet.
    • 1 old Oolite, the leader of the clan. Several younger adult family members. Opal, an ambitous woman who wanted to reclaim the family’s fortunes, is NOT here, which is odd. The family last heard of her getting in trouble in Sugar’s Crossing, but she’s not there anymore.
  • the quarry
    • top view of the Oolite mine. A shallow funnel with three spiraling paths leading to a flat bottom. Entrances to mine tunnels along each of the three paths.
    • A wide conical hole in the ground with a flat bottom. Three paths spiral down from the surface to the bottom.
    • The first excavation, now just a way to get to the tunnels. (two entrances on each spiral path)
  • the tunnels
    • cramped, twisting, dark, and confusing.
    • square and just tall enough for a metal Dwarf.
    • This is where the ore is found
    • Some tunnels might connect to the Dung Beetle caverns

Boss:

  • Old Oolite, the leader of the family. A greedy dwarf trying to strike it rich.
  • Agenda: Hoarder (keep your treasures), Isolationist (keep outsiders away)

    • Dwarf Gold-Digger (book 4, page 253)
      • Clear The Path: When the dwarf charges forward, everyone in their path is sent flying out of their way, and every obstacle is destroyed.
      • Greed Is Good: The gold digger is easily  bribed by Precious things and promises of riches, and is always willing to stop and listen to any offers.
      • Unbreakable: This stat is always damaged first. Whenever a different dwarf gold digger stat becomes damaged, heal Unbreakable. If the gold digger would be destroyed while this  stat is undamaged, damage this stat instead.

Forces:

  • Metal Dwarf
    • Designed to mine and gather ore. A switch under the backpack has three positions: rest, gather, and return, labelled in Dwarvish. The Metal Dwarf resists efforts to interfere in its mission or turn the switch. Their metal bodies do not take damage from normal weapons.
      • Iron Grip: Anyone grabbed by a Metal Dwarf cannot escape until the Metal Dwarf is damaged or decides to let go.
      • High-pressure Pistons: Anyone who pays a price near a Metal Dwarf gets tossed aside.
  • Dung Beetles
    • Giant beetles the size of a hatchback car. They dig tunnels in the rocky hills around the mine, and roll boulders instead of balls of dung. They care for their young in underground nests.
      • Keep Rolling: If a Dung Beetle feels threatened, it prefers to attack from ambush, rolling a boulder on its foe.
      • Thick Carapace: This stat must be damaged twice.
